Gastric ulcers are always a hot topic in the horse industry. There are all sorts of old wise tales on diagnosing and treating gastric ulcers. Thankfully for us, we have technology that allows us to definitively diagnose and treat gastric ulcers effectively.
After ~12 hours of fasting, a camera is passed into the horse's stomach to physically look for ulcers. There are two different types of gastric ulcers, squamous and glandular. Each type requires a slightly different course of treatment. A definitive diagnosis of gastric ulcers allows us to create the most effective treatment plan for your horse. Gastroscopy is now being offered by Westview Equine both in clinic and on the road! Call today to discuss if your horse is a good candidate for gastroscopy.
